Toronto, ON – April 19, 2021 – Today, Serlin Greaves (the duo Joey Serlin and Daniel Greaves of JUNO-nominated group, The Watchmen) share Seasick – the second single from their debut album, Sad Songs For Sale, out May 28 on Fifth Kid Records. While the band’s home base of Toronto moves through another lockdown, the song was written during the pandemic’s early days in the midst of witnessing global news, contemplating the impact this event is having on younger generations. In addition, the band shares a powerful lyric video for the project’s first single, Teenage Heart, supporting Kids Help Phone – watch the video here and learn about the initiative below. 

On the inspiration and writing process behind Seasick, Joey Serlin says: 

“During the first wave lockdown, like many of us, I was constantly connected to digital media, trying to get a handle on what we were all collectively facing, with our first generational pandemic. I came across a clip of a doctor in Saudi Arabia, returning home from a long shift, stopping his son from approaching him, for fear he was contagious with COVID. I cried, which doesn’t happen very often, as I thought about my own four kids, and what was happening to their world.

I couldn’t help but think about all of the doctors, nurses and frontline workers, who have found themselves in this war that they never could have expected. They're in it, with no way out. It is so impressive how they don’t quit and keep fighting for all of us. This was the initial moment of inspiration for ’Seasick,' but as I wrote the song, it evolved into much more. It contemplates the loss of innocence, that comes with growing up and navigating the uncontrollable twists and turns that life, fate, time and circumstance throws at you. It also speaks to the bravery needed, to put your hand up and say to the people you love, I need help. In my own personal journey, it took me many years to learn how to get past my own old school Canadian Prairie pride and be able to do this.” 

The lyric video for Teenage Heart highlights the song’s narrative around online connection: how youth live, learn and grow in a digital age, and the emotions and experiences that arise in these collective spaces. Knowing that youth are struggling more than ever this year, Serlin Greaves wanted to use the video to raise awareness and act as a call to action for their fans to donate to Kids Help Phone, who provide free, confidential mental health support to Canadian youth. Both Seasick and Teenage Heart are featured on Sad Songs For Sale, a catalogue of powerful songs that cover timely, relatable themes: navigating the changing state of our world and communities, the evolution of relationships, life lessons, time and the decisions one makes through every experience, and the preciousness of each moment. Some of the heavier elements displayed during Joey and Daniel’s early days as Canadian rock icons are contrasted with acoustic-based tracks, Love You Less, Morning Song, and At Home. About Serlin Greaves

Some things were just meant to last. That can certainly be said of the friendship between Joey Serlin and Daniel Greaves, who have been making music together for over 30 years. The Winnipeg natives rose to prominence during the indie rock revolution of the early 1990s as guitarist and lead vocalist, respectively, of The Watchmen, a band that would go on to become one of the most successful and beloved Canadian acts of the decade, earning two JUNO nominations, along with one Platinum and three Gold certified albums.

But as life’s other demands eventually shifted their focus away from The Watchmen, Joey and Daniel found themselves starting new families, new businesses and new musical projects on their own. That didn’t mean The Watchmen were ever finished; the band has periodically reunited to play their classic material for special events and occasions. Creating new music was a different story though, as the process gradually became more personal for each of them. Still, over the past couple of years their unshakable bond inevitably led Joey and Daniel to realize that working together again would be the most effective way to share this chapter of their lives.

The fruits of that renewed collaboration are contained on Sad Songs For Sale, their first album as Serlin Greaves, and a collection that reveals many new facets of the pair’s musical personalities.  After refining most of Sad Songs For Sale during writing sessions at Motel Bar, the watering hole Daniel owns in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood, work shifted to Joey’s Vapor Music studios, where Ryan Chalmers took on recording and drumming duties, and Dustin Anstey contributed on bass. For Joey, it was the ideal situation of being able to cut tracks completely on their own terms. 

To have a relationship that has lasted as long as Joey and Daniel’s is special in and of itself. But to also have that relationship still able to create powerful music after three decades puts them in rarefied company. In that sense, Serlin Greaves’ Sad Songs For Sale is more than a gift to those listeners who have stuck by them all these years. It’s also the perfect entry point for those poised to discover their rich body of work.
