SONG OFFERS FIRST PEEK AT NEW ALBUM
MY FATHER LOVED ME ARRIVING THIS FALL

TORONTO, ON – June 16, 2023 – Just two days before Father’s Day, acclaimed Canadian-American singer-songwriter, Rachael Kilgour, shares the first offering of her forthcoming album, My Father Loved Me, with the beautiful leading tribute, Dad Worked Hard. Produced by award-winning songwriter, Rose Cousins, Dad Worked Hard is a soft and stripped-down acoustic track, that introduces the heartfelt stories about Rachael’s father, who passed away shortly after she had written the song. Listen here and watch the intimate accompanying video here.

“This song serves as an introduction to my dad and to the collection of soon-to-be-released work,” Rachael shares. “It is the only completely bare track on the record, just me and my guitar. But we built each track around these basic building blocks – my singular voice and the expanding and contracting sense of time that comes with telling a story from the heart.”

Rachael was in the last days of tracking her 2019 EP, Game Changer, in an Asheville, NC recording studio, and had just written a new song – Dad Worked Hard. “I hadn't written any other songs about him at that point – I certainly hadn't considered making an entire album in his honour. I had no way of knowing how little time he had left or how much his death would transform me. But when the producer suggested recording Dad Worked Hard for the new EP, I just knew I needed to hold onto it. So I said it: ‘no, I think I’m gonna make a dad album’.”

Dad Worked Hard speaks to the sorrow of Rachael watching her once steady father deteriorate in body and mind, and the injustice of not being able to afford appropriate care for a man who worked long days as a building contractor all his life. Read Rachael’s reflections on her father’s life and the inspiration behind the song here.

Of the creation of the song, and new album, she continues, “It was such a gift to record with Rose. She and Chris worked so well together to create a warm environment and capture the essence of these songs. I am grateful for the beautifully intricate production choices she made throughout the rest of the record and for her understanding of the power of a simple, truthfully told song.”

Stay tuned for more of Rachael Kilgour’s stunning tribute to her dad as she unveils My Father Loved Me in the coming months.
