Toronto, ON – May 28, 2021 – Montreal’s Moonshine Collective proudly announce their upcoming album, SMS For Location, Vol. 4, out June 18 in partnership with FORESEEN Entertainment. To herald the launch, they share two opening tracks: Onward, featuring acclaimed producer, Sango & GRAMMY-winning artist and producer, Georgia Anne Muldrow, alongside Lelo, featuring Brooklyn/Toronto-based Moonshine favourite and Que Bajo party co-founder,Uproot Andy, with vocal compliments by Congolese artist, Sarah Kalume.  Listen to Onward and Leloand pre-order SMS For Location, Vol. 4 here.

A paean to strength and resilience, Onward juxtaposes Georgia’s smooth contralto against Sango’s clangorous, rumbling production. The artwork for Onward features a lukasa – a tablet/memory board from the Luba empire used to recount history in their rituals by diviners. Known on the dance floor for his remixes of Aaliyah, Drake, Little Dragon, Nas and The Weeknd plus his own Baile Funk EP series, Da Rocinha, and recent full-length, In the Comfort Of, Seattle-based, Sango, has produced music for Bryson Tiller, Tinashe, Mick Jenkins, GoldLink, Wale, Smino, Xavier Omar and more, and is part of Los Angeles collective Soulection. It’s L.A.’s avant-garde soul, jazz and hip-hop scene that Sango overlapped with ingenious electronic producer, vocalist and songwriter Georgia Anne Muldrow, who co-founded label SomeOthaShip Connect, has guested on tracks by Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Robert Glasper and other artists.

On Lelo, Brooklyn/Toronto-based Moonshine favourite and Que Bajo party co-founder, Uproot Andy, layers Congolese artist Sarah Kalume’sSwahili and French vocals into the sound of his Global Bass movement signature, replete with uplifting melodic synths and balmy steel drum rhythms. Written in partnership with Moonshine co-founder Pierre Kwenders, Lelo weaves its laid-back party beat with a lyrical thread of perseverance and dedication to creative work. Kalume, who launched into the public eye on musical reality show Vodacom Superstar in 2011 and joined its jury just a few years later, shows a depth of style and emotional expression in vocals originally recorded in Kinshasa in December 2020.

From deep underground in Montreal to under the Congo sun, the Moonshine party is back with its Afro-futuristic, bass-heavy, electro-funk sound. Moonshine’s latest album fuses levity and acumen, inventive electronic production with traditional instrumentation, all the while intensifying a collaboration between artists from around the world. SMS For Location, Vol. 4 crosses genres and continents to follow the producers, DJs and MCs from Montreal’s legendary Moonshine parties to underground UK clubs, Parisian Afro-beat soirées to Kinshasa’s booming electronic scene.

With an array of sounds, the project shines with contributions  by Moonshine co-founder, JUNO/Polaris nominated artist Pierre Kwenders, alongside Boddhi Satva, Montreal’s Nate Husser + Kris The $pirit, Toronto’s Uproot Andy, London’s Ahadaream, Mexico’s Zutzut, and more.

In April, the collective shared singlesGinseng and MalembeOn Ginseng, Bamao Yendé, a champion of marginalized musical styles with African roots, weaves a soulful sax melody through a UK garage-meets-batida beat.  Recorded between Montreal, Lisbon and Kinshasa, Malembe is the first collaboration between friends, Pierre Kwenders and Boddhi Satva, who craft a lithe melody that rapidly explodes with heavy bass and commanding vocals. Dropping MC RedBul’s energetic, booming voice into the mix alongside Kwenders’ lyrical resonance turns Malembe into a multi-layered musical conversation fit for pulsing dancefloors. The visual for Ginseng (Zaïre Space Program | Act I) was filmed with Congolese artist collective FARATA in a township of Kinshasa, and directed by award-winning Congolese director Nizar Saleh Mohamed, with co-direction by Moonshine’s Pierre Kwenders and Hervé "Coltan" Kalongo.
