THAT’S JUST THE WAY IT IS, BABE OUT TODAY
SOPHOMORE ALBUM SONGS FOR THE CANYON
SET TO ARRIVE NOVEMBER 17
TORONTO, ON – August 17, 2023 – When singer-songwriter, John Vincent III, set out on a journey from his southern California home with his partner and a guitar in tow in early 2021, he had no real plan, and no idea that the eight-month long odyssey –which saw the couple make their way to more than a dozen states across the US – would eventually lead to the creation of his sophomore album, Songs For the Canyon, due out on November 17.
Today, Vincent releases That’s Just the Way It Is, Babe, the album’s second single. Listen to it here. Songs For the Canyon is available for pre-order here.
The young artist – whose self-released 2019 debut amassed nearly two million monthly listeners on Spotify – wasn’t even sure that he wanted to continue to pursue a career in music. Nonetheless, he was determined to keep up with his daily practice of writing songs, which helped to keep him grounded and kept his mind sharp during the many long months of the pandemic.
As he recalls, “During my time away, I was still writing very simply structured and easy to play songs, just as I did when I first started making music – not allowing myself to stress over the details of the song, but writing about what I was thinking or feeling in the moment. Ultimately, it was never about me being done playing and writing: it was about me figuring out who I am outside of music, finding joy in other areas of life, working on my relationships and myself. I wasn’t sure it was for me anymore, and the only thing I knew to do was leave LA and start driving.”
He eventually made his way back to his home in California, and after a lengthy period of self-reflection, was persuaded to give music another go. The bulk of the recording on Songs For the Canyon was done with co-producer, Tom Elmhirst (Adele, David Bowie), with additional production by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, boygenius, Blake Mills), Jonathan Gilbert (Mt. Joy, The Kills), and Ryan Hadlock (Brandi Carlile, Vance Joy, Lumineers).
“That’s Just the Way It Is, Babe is one of two songs that made its way onto the album at the last minute,” says Vincent. “After sitting with the version of the album prior to this song being made, I felt like there was still something more that could be done to bring it all back to the canyon. I wanted something that had lots of acoustics moving around – that you can play alone, or make a jam session with your friends: something about leaving the bullshit behind and stepping into the light.”
