TORONTO, ON – May 19, 2023 – The deluxe edition of Early James’ Strange Time To Be Alive, a Dan Auerbach-produced record that came to life in three whirlwind days at Easy Eye Sound studios in Nashville, is out today via Easy Eye Sound. Strange Time To Be Alive (Deluxe Edition) features three previously unreleased songs from the original recording sessions. While they didn’t make it onto the original release, the three songs on the deluxe edition – Sucker For The Sad Life, One Trip Pony and The Trouble With Redemption – match the strength and singular sound of the original 12 songs from Strange Time To Be Alive.

The album is the sound of an artist sublimely out of step with the world. With all the charmed eccentricity of a true poet conjuring the ghosts of great southern gothic writers from Eudora Welty to William Faulkner, Early James takes in the endless absurdity he sees around him, then alchemizes his unease into a glorious patchwork of musical idioms: forsaken blues and contemplative folk songs, brooding murder ballads and lovestruck piano tunes. Early James ultimately extracts a certain magic from the madness, imbuing even the most painful truth-telling with a wild-eyed joie de vivre.

Upon its release last summer, Rolling Stone complimented how “James accented his outré, Tom Waits-ian compositions and signature gruff croon with knotty bursts of electric guitar and surprising melodic changes to complement his lyrics” on Strange Time To Be Alive, while BrooklynVegan praised the “world-weariness that makes James sound wise beyond his 28 years.” The album spent 19 consecutive weeks in the top 40 of the Americana radio charts, and Early James was featured on the cover of key streaming playlists like Spotify’s Fresh Folk and Tidal’s Gothic Americana.

Early James and his band are electric live, able to easily switch from hushed, introspective moments to a raging cacophony that would make Kyuss proud – often in the same song. Last year, they spent a good chunk of the summer and fall opening for The Black Keys as well as making their debut at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. In 2023, Early James has played the Americana UK festival, toured Europe twice and opened for Arlo McKinley in Australia. Early James wraps up a month-long European tour this weekend, and he’ll start a string of summer U.S. tour dates on June 15 in Charleston, SC.
