TORONTO, ON – September 16, 2022 – Today, soul singer and songwriter, Devon Gilfillian, has shared a seductive new single, Brown Sugar Queen (featuring Janice). Listen to Brown Sugar Queen here and watch the accompanying sultry video here.

An irresistible slice of Philly-soul, Brown Sugar Queen, featuring up-and-coming Swedish soul-sensation, Janice, was written by Devon Gilfillian, Danny Silberstein, and Ryan Linvill, and produced by Jeremy Lutitio (Joy Oladokun, NEEDTOBREATHE). The new track is Gilfillian’s first new release in almost two years, and first for his new label home, Fantasy Records.

Devon Gilfillian on Brown Sugar Queen (featuring Janice): “This song is very personal to me. Brown Sugar Queen is about my girlfriend - and an appreciation for all the beautiful, thick, black & brown women in the world. I want to celebrate black and brown joy, and connection and love-how beautiful it is to be brown, to be big, or small, or whatever size you are, and to feel sexy in that skin.”

With her high-profile starring role in Netflix’s upcoming mini-series The Playlist - based on the rise of Spotify - the cover of Swedish ELLE and a Swedish Best New Artist GRAMMY nomination to her credit, featured vocalist, Janice (full name Janice Kamya Kavander), is quickly becoming a major presence on the Scandinavian music scene.

A musical polymath with a deep knowledge and love of vintage soul, R&B, rock and hip-hop, the Philadelphia born, Nashville based Gilfillian, has seen his profile rise steadily since bursting into view  with his electrifying, self-titled debut EP in 2016 and the release of his much-admired, 2020 LP, Black Hole Rainbow. GRAMMY nominated (for Best Engineered Album), the recording received glowing notices from NPR, the New York Times, PASTE, The Tennessean, and Garden & Gun, spawned two Top 10 Triple A radio hits and numerous syncs across Apple TV+, HBO, CBS, Fox Sports, NASCAR, and the NFL. In late 2020, Gilfillian also released a song for song remake of Marvin Gaye’s iconic album, What’s Going On, donating the funds toward low-income communities of colour for election-cycle resources and education around the democratic process.

Concurrently, the in-demand musician has burnished his growing reputation as a captivating, can’t-miss live performer. Commanding club, theatre, and festival stages around the world, while also supporting artists such as Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Lake Street Dive, Anderson East, Keith Urban, Gladys Knight, Kaleo, The Fray, and Mavis Staples, among many others, Gilfillian is building an enduring connection with a burgeoning audience both in the U.S and overseas. Dates this fall include several major festival appearances and a west coast run with Lake Street Dive. Check the full tour itinerary below.

Growing up in Philadelphia with a musician father, Gilfillian discovered that the towering icons of his musician dad’s era — Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Hall & Oates — were just as foundational and exciting as the new sounds of his own generation: Wu-Tang Clan, Kanye West, the Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z, who inspired him in different ways.

On Brown Sugar Queen, (featuring Janice), Devon Gilfillian pays it forward, conjuring the raw, sexy emotions of his predecessors and the next-level production grooves of his R&B and hip-hop contemporaries, taking soul music into an exciting and restorative new future.
