BENNY MY DEAR HERE

Toronto, ON – August 28, 2020 – Where Does The Devil Hide, the eagerly anticipated EP from inventive singer-songwriter, Zella Day, has officially been released today in partnership with Concord Records and Easy Eye Sound. Produced by The Black Keys’, Dan Auerbach, the project ignites a vibrant new era for Zella and signals her evolution as both a musician and a visual auteur. Today, Zella has also debuted her newest single, Benny My Dear, a song packed with lush instrumentation, dazzling harmonies and guitar solos all dripping with retro Californian charm. It’s a track that wholly encapsulates the spirit of the project and serves as a fitting finale to the EP. Listen to Where Does The Devil Hide now via digital streaming platforms everywhere.

“Selfless love acts without expectation of receiving anything other than the satisfaction of giving,” says Zella of Benny My Dear. “Benny has been crying out for affection for far too long, he struggles to believe that he deserves it. Benny reminds us that vulnerability is the only way out and the only way in.”

From the radiant songs to the jaw-dropping imagery captured in her music videos and artwork for the project, every element of Where Does The Devil Hide shares a unified vision that melds vivid sounds, aesthetics and ideas inspired by the essence of quintessential California. Coming from a line of strong women who have called the West Coast home for decades, it’s a coastal affinity to which Zella is deeply connected. This genetic and geographical linkage are largely responsible for Zella's passionate embrace and understanding of human nature, psychedelia, and California’s history of creative subversion.

Over the past several months, Zella has unveiled four tastes from Where Does The Devil Hide, which have been met with acclaim from the likes of Flaunt Magazine, Guitar World, Clash Magazine, LA Weekly, American Songwriter, The Line of Best Fit, SF Chronicle, Notion and AV Club, who praised the EP as “smoldering torch songs, bouncing disco, Laurel Canyon grooves, and more. The five-song release is like a jukebox time capsule, all held together by Day’s warm vocals.”

Most recently, Zella released her single Only A Dream in July alongside a music video directed by Samuel Richard and Gianennio Salucci, and shot within the iconic Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA and along the golden beaches and sun-soaked highways of the California coast. Intimately-filmed and emotionally-charged, the piece is a poetic ode to the beautiful, yet often tragic journey that is love. Only A Dream was preceded by Purple Haze, a celestial rock song that Guitar World hailed “a psychedelic stoner anthem [that] would be right up Hendrix’s street,” the disco hit My Game, released in May alongside a cinematic music video inspired by classic spy films of the 1960s, and People Are Strangers, a sun-soaked ballad that Idolator named one of the year’s Best Pop Songs.

A free-spirited songstress in the tradition of Stevie Nicks and Dusty Springfield, Zella Day steps out of a sweet haze and into the California sun with a soulful stoned timbre and lyrical eloquence above Tarantino soundtrack-worthy disco-dripping psychedelia. She hinted at this uncompromising spirit on her 2015 full-length, KICKER. The album ushered Zella from a youth spent under the watch of mountains in Pinetop, AZ to beneath the glow of spotlights worldwide. In addition to putting up over 200 million streams, she invited the applause of Interview, Vice, Nylon, The FADER, Consequence of Sound, The New York Times, The Guardian, Vogue, InStyle, ELLE, Vanity Fair, W Magazine, FLAUNT, PAPER, and more. Beyond supporting Fitz and the Tantrums and Miike Snow on tour, she graced the stages of Coachella and Lollapalooza. On this trip, she found a creative kindred spirit in GRAMMY® Award-winning Black Keys founder and producer, Dan Auerbach. Partnering with his Easy Eye Sound, in collaboration with Concord Records, she recorded her forthcoming new EP, Where Does The Devil Hide. Zella introduces the project with People Are Strangers, My Game and now Purple Haze, a trio of lively singles that mark a new chapter in her exciting journey.
