Toronto, ON – April 16, 2020 – After Paul Chin, launched his stunning, introspective and intricate new project, Full Spectrum, on March 20, the multifarious Polaris-nominated Toronto producer and DJ has been engaging audiences with live sets to share the fresh sounds. Today, he announces two new livestream performances; the first on Friday, April 24 as part of URGNT LIVE, a new online venue experience aiding artists during the global pandemic, and an exclusive show titled Full Spectrum Suite on Friday May 1 as one of the selected artists for Music Together, a living room concert series to support Ontario artists in need.
Full Spectrum is a bright return as Paul’s first album in five years, and documents a period of creativity and collaboration, featuring Canadian artists Shad, Desirée Dawson, pHoenix Pagliacci and Rebekah Hawker. Listen to it here. Paul also applied his talents as a graphic artist to the project, designing all artwork and a limited edition Full Spectrum t-shirt, which is available via Bandcamp.
The collaborators on Full Spectrum will take the stage with Paul for Full Spectrum Sound, the official album release show, on October 1 at beloved Toronto venue, Rivoli. In the interim, audiences can catch Paul’s stunning live delivery of the project online. Paul’s April 24 set for URGNT will be a scaled down and condensed sampler of the Full Spectrum Sound set fans can expect at the release show. On May 1, Paul will be performing an all-new performance for Music Together called Full Spectrum Suite, sharing an entirely live remixed medley of all the songs from the EP in a way listeners have never heard them before.
With airplay on national community and CBC Radio, including premieres on CBC q, Big City Small World, features on Exclaim!’s The Eh! List and NOW Magazine’s #NOWPlaying Spotify lists, the project has been a highly anticipated release. You can learn more about Paul and the album process through a series of in-depth chats and features with EARMILK, The Creative Imbalance Podcast, Canadian Beats, CJRU’s The Cool Table, Studio01, Toronto Guardian, and Sidedoor Magazine with more on the way.
The title, Full Spectrum, was inspired by the range of experiences that led to the music being created; the ups and downs of coming to terms with where Paul Chin found himself in his career post-Dancing Drums, as well as the wider range of musical expression and exploration he was now able to engage in. Paul faced a myriad of life-changing events, including marriage, and an immigration status in Canada lapsing (and a permanent residence application being rejected) - forcing him to leave the country to return to his birthplace of Cayman Islands for nine months until returning to get married. This period of time made Paul available to collaborate with friends he never had the time to work with, and practice creating and producing styles of music he never explored prior.
Full Spectrum is a 20-minute gaze into the musical fascinations and influences that have made him the artist he is today, with assists from an all-star cast of features. Paul deftly folds anime scores, dancehall, orchestral soul, hip-hop, and electronica into his sound, architecting a rich foundation for those joining him in the mix. The project includes CBC Searchlight winner, Desirée Dawson on lead single, Take It Or Leave It, Polaris Music Prize nominee, Shad (Take Two), Toronto folk artist Rebekah Hawker on Hard Times, and R&B songstress/member of Toronto duo TRP.P, pHoenix Pagliacci (on the Carnival rhythm-infused Slow Wine). Together, they deliver effortlessly killer performances which confirm Paul's reputation as a captain of musical voyaging. The album was mixed and mastered by Toronto’s Freeza Chin(The Weeknd, Wiley, Boi-1da and Tre Mission).
Paul Chin is a Polaris Music Prize-nominated producer that has risen from a pedigree of classical training, to discovering bedroom production; then years of releasing music as a beatmaker's beatmaker; followed by almost a half-decade of inwardly-focused musical exploration, practice, and collaboration. The Toronto artist's return to the market – while easy to be apprehensive about – begins a new chapter marked by this joyous and confident reflection of his vast musical vocabulary, and adoration for the artform as an electronic artist.
About Paul Chin
Paul Chin is a lifelong student, lover, and explorer of music, which manifests itself in his work as a music producer and DJ. Growing up in the Cayman Islands, importing influence and inspiration from any and everywhere was always ingrained in his sense of identity. Additionally, the ethos of DIY culture and resourcefulness exemplified by his Chinese-Jamaican immigrant parents are part of what drew him to the resilient philosophy of hip-hop while studying classical and jazz in school and private music lessons.
Eventually, his robust musical foundation and scrappy work ethic would meet his insatiable appetite for new and exciting sounds, leading him toward beat-driven electronic music. Since permanently relocating to Toronto, Canada, Paul has embedded himself in the city’s creative fabric. Collaborating and performing alongside resident stalwarts such as Skratch Bastid, Harrison, Tanika Charles, and Shad has afforded him local ambassadorship on stages alongside the likes of Snakehips, Falcons, Toro Y Moi, and Shigeto. His releases all possess a gravitational centre of instrumental hip-hop, but draw his pursuits of jazz, gospel, IDM, disco, garage, dancehall, and anime scores into their orbit. Not content to emulate trendy aesthetics from any one genre, Paul continues to develop his sound, performance, and collaborative work from a diverse spectrum of artists.
