LAILA BIALI ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF HER BRAND NEW SELF-TITLED ALBUM

SHARES BEAUTIFUL RENDITION OF YELLOW

ALBUM SET FOR RELEASE ON JANUARY 26th

AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER NOW

Toronto, ON – November 17, 2017 –
On January 26, 2018, award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist, Laila Biali, will release her brand new, self-titled album via Chronograph Records in Canada. The culmination of everything the acclaimed songstress has achieved so far, this record is an eclectic-but-focused collection of songs that Biali describes as her most “fully representative” piece of work to date. Available for pre-order now, the album features brand new original songs as well as a handful of covers, including Biali’s beautiful rendition of Coldplay’s, Yellow. Have a listen to the track here, and check out what Biali has to say about the cover.

“I have been struggling to capture my full artistic voice on recording since my debut album back in 2005,” Biali comments. “Each release felt representative on various levels, but nothing gave the complete picture. LAILA BIALI unites all the facets of who I am as an artist: pianist, singer, arranger, composer, a devotee of Jazz and of other genres. This album feels like an arrival, a homecoming."

Catchy, sophisticated, and unlike anything currently on the radio, it’s pop music, but not the kind that can be neatly tagged by an algorithm. Melodies take thrilling left turns and pre-choruses give way to instrumental interludes. One minute, Biali is soaring over a bluesy storm of handclaps and hard-charging keyboard riffs (Got to Love), the next, she is pouring out her soul on an impassioned, slow-burning plea for empathy (Refugee). It’s pop music, but the experimental, distinctly human variety popularized by Regina Spektor, Rachael Yamagata, and Sara Bareilles.

Biali has toured with Chris Botti, Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega, and recorded with and supported Sting. Her accolades include “SOCAN Composer of the Year”and “Keyboardist of the Year” at Canada’s National Jazz Awards. She takes the best of pop, rock, classical, world and soul, informs it with her expertise in jazz, and weaves it into her musical arrangements and original songs. Laila has presented her music at prestigious venues spanning five continents including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tokyo’s Cotton Club, Peru’s El Festival Internacional de Lima, and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Her studio recording, Tracing Light, received a JUNO nomination in 2011 for Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year, and her follow-up album, Live in Concert, was given an enthusiastic four-star review and named one of the Best Albums of 2013 by DownBeat Magazine. In 2015, Laila released her first album of entirely original music, House of Many Rooms – an indie-pop project featuring Lisa Fischer (Rolling Stones, 20 Feet From Stardom), Jo Lawry (Sting, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel), Alan Hampton (Robert Glasper, Andrew Bird), and the Toronto Mass Choir. She is also the host of CBC’s Saturday Night Jazz, a national radio show launched in September of 2017.
