Toronto, ON – March 24, 2020 – Today, JUNO-nominated Toronto artist, STORRY, shares her self-produced Claymation film, Up, set to a song of the same name from her latest album, CHIII: The Come Up. What arrives with powerful messages in a time of global crisis, Up was set to launch at the now-postponed Toronto Short Film Festival. Nothing is stopping STORRY from sharing the visual that depicts compassion, creativity and support, as Up has already screened at several film festivals, and continues to make waves as it is unveiled to the public. “Often, we excuse people we love for their misbehaviour because we empathize and feel we know their true essence. But even killers have mothers or friends or partners who love them and who see the best in them. And we take it upon ourselves to clean up after their mess, hoping that they will change, hoping that they will soon return to their true selves,” STORRY says of themes within the film. “But sometimes, letting them go, or perhaps taking drastic measures to rehabilitate them, is the only way to truly love and care for them and ourselves. This is the meaning behind the dirt in the film. I hope this video rings true in the hearts of those who watch it, in a world where more is more and less is not good enough, new is better and what becomes old is an increasingly shorter window. I hope that people will laugh and cry and leave changed. Because what is art if it doesn’t make us feel and ask important questions?

Audiences can tune into a free livestreamed concert on Saturday, March 28 at 9:00 pm, where STORRY will perform a pared-down set of songs from CHIII: The Come Up and unreleased music. Up is a clay animation short wherein a man's insatiable appetite gradually destroys his relationship and entire surroundings. His partner struggles to stay by his side and clean up his mess. Filmed over four months in STORRY’s basement alongside a small team (full credits below) with zero training in film production or animation, Up has already won the award for Best Editing at the Montreal International Wreath Film Festival and Best Animated Music Video at jellyFEST in Los Angeles, CA. The film has received numerous nominations, including Best Animated and Best Narrative Music Video at the Austin Music Video Festival, and Best  Animated Short at the Rome International Film Festival. It has also screened at the Toronto International Spring of Horror and Fantasy Film Festival, Oregon Short Film Festival, and the Grand Rapids Feminist Film Festival. 

STORRY was nominated for a 2020 JUNO Award for Reggae Recording of the Year for Another Man, featured on prolific Jamaican production duo Sly & Robbie’s Pocketbook Riddim project. STORRY has been sharing her STORY, with national features in The Canadian Press, EARMILK, The Toronto Star, The Creative Imbalance Podcast, and Canadian Beats, amongst others, with her music played on CBC q, CBC Fresh Air, CBC Big City Small World, and CIUT, amongst other national radio outlets. 

STORRY’s debut album, CH III: The Come Up, was released February 20. The project is based on a chapter of her life; a woman exiting the sex industry to enter the music industry, only to discover that both are equally misogynistic and problematic. With roots in the opera world, yet expansion into all styles, STORRY’s live set is always one for the books. Following the album launch, she rocked a packed room at Toronto’s iconic Lula Lounge, followed by a show in Montreal at Bar Le Ritz PDB and a North American tour with Sofar Sounds. CH III: The Come Up is based on STORRY’s life. She grapples with her relationships with her mother and family, romantic life, her careers, dreams and with money. STORRY does not live in any specific genre. Like her music, STORRY is multi-dimensional and fluid. She pulls influences from hip hop to opera, reggae to musical theatre. She is an oxymoron and has equal amounts of grit and poise. The album was written with the intent to take the listener on a journey, focusing more on the storrytelling. And her shows are an experience that takes you through peaks and valleys of emotions, a ride with tears, excitement and laughter. That is why STORRY refuses to be boxed into one style of writing, being, branding, medium or avenue of creation. She wants to show that sex-workers, strippers, women, ALL people, are multi-dimensional and cannot be judged or defined on the surface.

Perhaps the most raw and honest representation of the project is Money Ain’t Free. Confidently quipped as a “Motown record without the innocence,” the song reflects on STORRY’s real-life experience of returning to work as a stripper to finance her art. Watch the video for Money Ain’t Free here, written, directed and co-produced by Montreal-born, Toronto-based director, Karimah Zakia Issa.
