FIRST LOOK AT NEW MUSIC COMING IN 2021
Toronto, ON – January 15, 2021 – Today, multitalented Toronto-based artist, Jesse Maxwell, releases his raw and emotive new single, Undone. This is Maxwell’s first piece of music to be released since his genre-bending and blending debut album, Radio Silence (May 2020). Undone sees Maxwell dig deep and open up to his listeners – something he has become well known for in the lyrics he writes. Written, performed, produced, mixed and mastered by Maxwell, Undone gives listeners a taste of what’s to come from him during the rest of 2021, as he is currently preparing to release a new project this Spring. “Undone is a song about coming to terms with parts of yourself you have yet to love and accept, for me it was sexuality,” explains Maxwell. “The lyrics ambiguous and mysterious in presentation reflect the struggle of being internally honest. To break it down, the pre-chorus goes: ‘When I’ve come undone, why bother running from what I can’t confront when I’ve come undone?’ – saying that even when I’m a mess inside my head and I have nothing to run from, I still can’t admit to myself who I am.”
The nature of these lyrics is intentionally ambiguous and mysterious to represent the struggle Maxwell faces in being direct with himself. Additionally, the track allows the listener to envision themselves in the music and hopefully foster a better understanding of themselves in the process. It’s a reserved and soothing track, with a comforting melody inviting listeners to truly embrace the parts of themselves they struggle to face.
In the live video for Undone, Maxwell and his band bring the song to life with their vocal and instrumental talents. They were inspired to share this version of the song in a video format as a way to further connect with listeners and give them an idea of what a live performance could look like in the future, but from the comfort of the viewers’ home. Jesse shares, “Putting out this song feels like a weight lifted and clears my head. Defining thoughts that are so abstract, we barely understand them ourselves is a challenge. My goal with this song was not to explain in detail what was going on but rather bring you to that moment and experience it with me; the confusion, the dishonesty, and resistance of self-acceptance to what was in this case sexuality. This song is about fighting yourself, and not accepting yourself for who you truly are. I couldn’t tell you why I fight myself, it’s just something that I dealt with and self-love is a process.”
