JAY FEELBENDER DEBUTS NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO FOR CHEAP WHISKY

TORONTO, ON – September 17, 2021 - Today, Toronto alt-pop rocker, Jay Feelbender (Goodbye Honolulu, Luna Li, Creep Creep Beach and HeadSpace), debuts his brand new jangly and upbeat acoustic track, Cheap Whisky. The first release from his upcoming solo record, Cheap Whisky is accompanied by a cheeky music video featuring Jay traversing the city of Toronto in an inflatable bubble while downing a glass of the song's namesake! Listen here and watch here.

“I wrote the lyrics for Cheap Whisky one cold, end of winter night during lockdown in Toronto,” says Jay. “I was walking around with a little bottle of… you guessed it, cheap whisky (Canadian Club to be exact) and I had these feelings welling up inside me about the loneliness we’d all been feeling over the last year of this global pandemic, which is a very strange feeling to have when you live in a big city. While I was walking around, I literally saw no one on the street, and I felt almost completely alone in the city. It was scary but also felt very unconfined.”

Jay continues, "Essentially, the song was written to highlight the isolation, and in some cases, the strange freedom that has been felt all over the world during this global pandemic. As well as the beauty and healing that can come from spending some time exploring the world around you on a long walk."

To come up with the visuals, Jay sent the song to Emmy-nominated Director, Warren P. Sonoda (Trailer Park Boys, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Things I Do For Money, Over 100 Music Videos), and he came back with the idea of the musician galavanting around Toronto in an inflatable bubble.

“I was worried about being in downtown Toronto, crowded with people in the huge ball, and I actually couldn’t get in or out of the bubble without help so it was a bit claustrophobic and scary, but I was so happy with the result and I think all the feelings I was having added to the energy of the performance in the video,” says Jay.

Cheap Whisky was recorded in Toronto with Braden Sauder at Marquee Sound, along with several other tracks. It marked the first time Jay had worked with a producer and also an amazing drummer for his solo work – having previously programmed his own drums and taking a very DIY home recordings approach, Jay wanted his work to evolve with this next project. Jay and Braden remained in a COVID bubble together for ten days where each day consisted of waking up, making music right away, and going until they couldn’t anymore - then crashing and doing it all again the next day.

“The 24/7 method may not be sustainable,” adds Jay. “But it might be my favourite way to crank out a body of work.”

Have a sip of Cheap Whisky with Jay Feelbender and stay tuned for more music coming from him soon!
