Toronto, ON – April 5, 2019 – As she prepares to launch her forthcoming album, 13th Floor, Brampton-via-Toronto artist and producer, Haviah Mighty, shares a third single and video for Wishy Washy. The song includes Haviah’s sister, Omega Mighty, and follows Waves, featuring fellow Toronto artist, Sean Leon, and In Women Colour – the first three tracks to appear on the project – out on May 10. Watch the video here and pre-order the album now.
Haviah will celebrate the release of 13th Floor with a show in Toronto on May 3 at Drake Underground – tickets are available here. Tonight, she’ll rock The Diezel Room in Oshawa, ON as part of Oshawa Music Week, and will perform at Festival d’ete de Quebec in July. See all details below.
Wishy Washy stands out from tracks Haviah has released to date, with its fusion of reggae, dancehall, pop and hip-hop. Co-produced by Taabu and 2oolman (of A Tribe Called Red), the tone is quickly set with the catchiness and simplicity of the words, in combination with the melodious production.
“The song is about unreliability, and about those who can’t commit to others, or even certain thoughts and ideas,” Haviah says. Omega Mighty launches into her verse with a patois twang, making it very clear what the song is about. “It’s a light attack on the indecisive types, something we’ve all experienced in our lives; ‘All this time, you probably didn’t want me. Like Lauryn and the Fugees, you be killin’ softly. So many times you tell me that you’re really sorry, but all I really hear is that you’re - Wishy Washy.”
Wishy Washy follows the succession of Waves and In Women Colour, highlighting three of four tracks on the record shared pre-album launch, giving listeners a sneak peek to the overall body of work. All videos were co-directed by Yung Yemi, and Shanik, assisted by Lorenzo Colocado, and filmed in Toronto. Yung Yemi produced the photography for all singles and the album artwork.
13th Floor follows Haviah’s acclaimed 2017 release, Flower City, and highlights her vast musical influences, sharp songwriting and production style. She co-executively produced the record alongside 2oolman of A Tribe Called Red, and collaborated with numerous artists, including Sean Leon, Clairmont The Second, and her sister, Omega Mighty. Additional production credits include Obuxum, Robotaki, Young Dreadz, Taabu, Lambo and brother, Mighty Prynce.
Haviah recently rocked stages during JUNOFest in London, Ontario and the red carpet, celebrating her winning spot in the 2019 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class. She then headed south to Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Idaho, for her first US show. Uproxx reported her “rocking the full room with cool professionalism and electric energy," while Riff Magazine praised her “confident style and firecracker personality was likely to have made many new fans in Idaho’s largest city.” Haviah shared insight on the album’s concepts through an intimate and exclusive chat with George Stroumboulopoulos on The Strombo Show’s March 24 episode – listen here.
Haviah Mighty didn’t need to change her birth name when she decided to dedicate her career to music. In fact, Mighty couldn’t be more accurate a word to describe the 26-year-old artist, named one of XXL’s 15 Toronto Rappers You Should Know in 2019.
Raised in a musical household in Brampton, Ontario, Haviah started singing at the age of 4, rapping at 11, and producing at 15. Well-known for being one of the three MCs who make up The Sorority — a hip-hop group born during an all-female cypher on International Women’s Day in 2016 — Haviah is making equally large waves as a solo artist.
Haviah has been releasing music independently since 2009, but it was her project, Flower City (2017), that propelled her solo career into further success. In 2018, Mighty’s track, Vámonos, appeared on HBO’s hit series, Insecure. That same year, Mighty was declared winner of the prestigious 2018/2019 Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class.
Haviah’s explosive live show, filled with in-your-face intensity and her fast, technical flows, has also quickly developed her reputation as one to keep an eye on, earning her opening slots for acclaimed artists like Sheck Wes, Nelly, Desiigner, Kranium, A Tribe Called Red, and Snoop Dogg.
In 2019, Mighty is preparing to release her most fully realized body of work to date, and continues to carve out spaces that boldly defy gendered expectations for women in hip hop.
