CADENCE WEAPON RELEASES FRESH SOUNDS ON BE ABOUT PRODUCED BY EYTAN TOBIN

KICKS OFF NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR
ON JUNE 15 WITH SHOW AT NXNE IN TORONTO
AND STOPS AT JAZZ WINNIPEG AND HILLSIDE FESTIVAL

SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT NOW

Toronto, ON – June 8, 2018 –  Today, Cadence Weapon shares fresh sounds with Be About - an infectious new single produced by Toronto producer, Eytan Tobin, of the Bedroomer music collective. The track comments on social elements of chasing clout on Instagram, and the illusory quality of rap today. Listen here. Be About is a sample of what can be heard on Canadian festival stages this summer, as Cadence will kick things off with shows at North By Northeast Festival (NXNE) in Toronto, Jazz Winnipeg and Guelph’s Hillside.

The song follows the stunning video for his single, High Rise. Premiering via Noisey, the audiovisual essay explores timely topics and speaks truth to the current climate of gentrification, urban spaces and the evolution of metropolitan life. Filmed in Toronto’s downtown core, the video was directed by Lester Millado and produced by Toronto creative collective, PIQUE, with choreography by Caden Mackinnon and Chantelle Mostacho. Watch the video here.

“High Rise was inspired by my experience looking for a place to live when I first moved to Toronto. It made me imagine a demonic real estate agent chanting at me to give up the search for a house, to move into a condo,” Cadence says of the inspiration for the track. “I think many people are dealing with rampant gentrification and the erosion of community today so I decided to write a protest song about it.”

High Rise (produced by Jacques Greene) is from Cadence Weapon’s much anticipated, new self-titled album, released on January 19 via eOne Music. The album is his first since 2012’s Hope In Dirt City, which was second to be nominated for a Polaris Music Prize. Purchase and stream Cadence Weapon here.

The album features appearances from Deradoorian, Blue Hawaii, Brendan Phillip and Casey MQ, and tracks from producers, Kaytranada, Francis Got Heat, Jacques Greene and Harrison. The 12-track album is a reintroduction to Cadence Weapon as an artist, and he's excited for the world to experience this new beginning.

Cadence will head to Europe in August, and continue a North American tour through the fall, as he has announced a cross country run with stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Montreal, Fredericton, St. John’s, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Virginia, Boston, and the revered Halifax Pop Explosion in Nova Scotia. See below for a complete list of cities and dates.

Recognized as Canada’s “most creative” rapper by the National Post, Cadence Weapon has consistently exhibited a passion to take rap into new and unexpected directions. Born in Edmonton, Cadence had an upbringing uniquely suited to becoming a rapper. His father Teddy, a Brooklyn native, was the DJ that introduced hip-hop to Edmonton with his pioneering radio show, The Black Experience in Sound, on CJSR 88.5 FM. After spending his childhood immersed in his father’s diverse archive of music, Cadence started rapping at age 13. Soon, he was entering freestyle battles, rocking shows with his uncle’s funk band and teaching himself how to make beats.

Following the online success of his mixtape, Cadence Weapon Is The Black Hand, he released his self-produced debut album, Breaking Kayfabe, in December 2005 at the age of 19. The album was met with international critical acclaim, with the BBC praising its mix of “vivid, scattershot rhymes” and “techno-tinged beats.” In 2009, Cadence was appointed Poet Laureate of Edmonton, making him the literary ambassador of his home city for two years, during which he was invited to read poetry for an event at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

“Since letting some light in, and showing some openness to more conventional production, Pemberton has crafted his most fully-realized and best album yet.” Beatroute

“It’s a record that invites listeners in and finds us
truly getting to know Pemberton on a new level.” –
CBC Music

“…his most provocative and well-executed album and a high water mark
 for hip-hop on this continent.”
Exclaim!

“Always a literate, smart and — mainly — narrative rap artist, Rollie Pemberton was always married to his own muse and chasing none of the day’s trends. That’s why he can make an album that sounds as old skool and near-classic hip hop as this 12-track album does…” – Vancouver Sun
