Toronto, ON – November 16, 2018 – Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness’ long anticipated new album, Upside Down Flowers, is out today worldwide via Fantasy Records. His third full length album, Upside Down Flowers makes a strong musical and lyrical statement about McMahon’s transformative journey “Into the Wilderness.” The album’s 11 songs are slice-of-life vignettes animated by McMahon’s vivid lyrics and dynamic melodies. Much like the record’s cover art—an iconic ‘60s-’70s SoCal pool scene with a twist (inspired by jet-set photographer Slim Aarons); the songwriting is fully realized and retains a vivid sense of both the natural and unnatural.
“I have so much emotion wrapped up in this album,” states McMahon. “Upside Down Flowers is a version of real and surreal Southern California that surrounds me physically and emotionally.”
Upside Down Flowers features the first single, Ohio, which reached Top 40 at Alternative radio, the poignant, autobiographical Teenage Rockstars, the ingenious escapism of Blue Vacation and the album’s latest release Paper Rain, watch the track’s absorbing video HERE.
“I’ve always been drawn to a good underdog story,” explains McMahon. “Maybe it’s because at times I’ve seen a piece myself in those stories, or maybe it’s because I’m moved by the image of someone who struggles but does so with grit and the potential to prevail against great odds. Maybe it’s a little bit of both. Either way, Paper Rain is one of those stories. The story of a debt stacking up so high that it seems the only way out is play one last hand. To win it all back and start clean. It might sound foolish but when there’s so little left to lose, would you rather go quietly or go down swinging?”
Upside Down Flowers was produced by Butch Walker (Pink, Weezer, Panic! At The Disco) --who also plays drums, bass and guitar on the album--along with guest keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Beck), with strings recorded by Emmy-winning, Tony & GRAMMY nominated arranger/ composer, Rob Mathes, at Abbey Road Studios.
“The thing I tell people often is that when you write great songs, you can record them in any style or production aesthetic and it will still be a great song,” said Walker. “This is Andrew with his songwriting craft. I’m glad to call him a friend and proud of the music we made together.”
The release of Upside Down Flowers comes on the heels of the massive success of this year’s Dear Jack Foundation annual 200K Challenge. Over the course of the November 11th weekend, over 1400 fans joined McMahon in Chicago and Boston for the 9th annual Dear Jack Benefit weekend which included the sold-out show at Boston’s Royale Theater and the Andrew McMahon lyric inspired scavenger hunt. These events alone raised over $100,000 bringing the year’s total to over $301,000! The Dear Jack Foundation was established by McMahon following his recovery from leukemia at age 22. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness will kick off the Upside Down Flowers 2019 U.S. Tour on January 23rd in Phoenix, Arizona. About Andrew McMahon
Raised on the East Coast and in the Midwest, McMahon began writing songs at age nine, drawing inspiration from singer/songwriter/pianists such as Elton John and Billy Joel. While still in high school, McMahon co-founded an early incarnation of pop-punk band Something Corporate, whose 2002 major-label debut hit No. 1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers Chart. In 2004, he formed Jack's Mannequin and then-on the cusp of releasing the band's 2005 debut-was diagnosed with leukemia at age 22. Eventually fully recovering, McMahon went on to release two more studio albums with Jack's Mannequin, in addition to composing songs for the NBC series Smash (an endeavor that earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 2013) and established The Dear Jack Foundation one of the first Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) specific cancer foundations which advocates for and supports initiatives that benefit AYAs diagnosed with cancer. In 2014, he released Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness which featured the gold certified single, Cecilia and the Satellite. His television appearances include Today Show, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live.
